Ann Patchett

It felt like Patchett decided she needed to publish another novel but didn't really have a story to tell. So, she takes a woman in her fifties, Daphne, and has her run into her second stepfather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York city, where she is spending the day with her husband Jonathon. It has been 44 years since Daphne has seen Eddie, her mother's second husband of three. The novel is about her and Eddie in the present day. Interesting, but not compelling or terribly meaningful.
Given that introduction, Ann Patchett's writing is quite good, especially her characters. The relationship between Eddie and Daphne is astounding! She rounds out her weak plot with some excellent storytelling. Particularly interesting was the story of the car accident Eddie and Daphne were in 44 years ago, which led to her mom leaving Eddie.
I should have read my blog before diving into Whistler. I gave two other Ann Patchett books two hearts, and one received three hearts.
If you like Ann Patchett, definitely read this one. If you are looking for a quick and light read, Whistler will do you well. So, a mixed recommendation.

I didn’t find her story compelling, and felt that, after all those years of no contact , the current relationship seemed contrived. I gave the book low marks. I have read most, if not all, of Patchett’s books and find her writing uneven.

I have been also disappointed in Patchett’s recent works. I will probably give this a try but it won’t be high on my list.
